I've been eyeing my grandfather's 1994 Miata for a few days now, and think I have found a way to pay for it... but I'm not sure whether I should do it or not.

Should I sell my gaming desktop on Craigslist? If so, for what amount of money? Specs are as follows:

From my experience, it's really difficult to sell computers since people who look for custom computers on Craigslist are always people trying to lowball in order to get something that would otherwise be out of their budget to build.

When I built my friend's computer, $1200 flight simulator kind of build, I told him he'd never be able to sell it back unless he wants to take a huge loss on it.

Part it out???

I had great success selling my original mother board from the PC and 2.5" HDD from my Macbook Pro...

Honestly, if you can't afford to buy a car outright, you probably shouldn't be buying a car.

Since it's your grandfather's car, why don't you just ask him to hold it for your until you can come up with the money?

That's basically what I'm planning on doing... but it needs some stuff done to it. One of the belts squeals on deceleration, the rear end links are shot, it has REALLY bad cancer on the rocker panels, etc

If you can just take a small personal loan out from the bank for a few grand. It'll establish decent credit and the payments will be low. Just tell don't tell them it's for a car.

But why don't I just part out my computer instead? I already payed for it...

Because that doesn't build credit that you will need later in life. Trust me on this. Also you literally just built that computer. Seems like you spent a nice bit of change on it. How much is he selling it to you for?

IDK yet... I could probably get it for $500... or less depending on if I cash out my working hours for him ;) (I helped him rebuild a Stearman Biplane over the past 4 years)

It has some rust issues but runs and drives fine... and it has the world's shittiest bondo job

Yeaaa keep the computer and get like a $2k loan from the bank if you can. Monthly payments over the next 2 years will be about $100 or so. That way you have enough for the car, repairs and maybe a mod or two.

But I don't have a job... so no source of income to pay said payments :(

Ahhh so then what were you plans on insurance, gas and repairs? Is this going to be just a project car that you're gonna piece together over time when you get finances?

Read the other comments, I don't think this is a good idea. Sounds like it has a lot of problems, and to be honest if you're in the position of selling a computer to buy a car you probably can't afford the insurance/gas/ repairs it'll end up needing.

And to answer your question, if you're willing to sell your rig as pieces, and still have all receipts+warranties you might be able to get 70% of your money back... maybe.

This is where it gets weird...

I meant "buy" it from him as in pay him some money for the car (maybe $1 on my 18th birthday next month???) but leave the title under his name, have him add my name to his insurance (or not, depending on how he feels about it) and pay him the money to insure it... the gas money would be coming from my gas budget (for the Sportwagen) and the insurance money? I haven't figured that one out yet :/

So on top of needing to find the money to pay for it, the worth of the car you want to buy is questionable (at best) as well? Some things you just have to let go and this sounds like one of them. Don't spend everything get all the time. Save up for a while and buy a good Miata once you've got the funds to pay for it and the maintenance and other running costs it takes to keep an old car on the road. Do so only after you've got the other expenses of life covered comfortably as well. Priorities, buying a project car should not be so high on that list.

This Miata is good! It just needs some rocker panel rust fixed via expanding foam and Bondo or a cutting bit and sheet metal and welding! It is certainly in better condition than half the ones out there...

In fact I drove it about 30 miles today. It runs and drives just fine, just the rocker panels don't look that healthy

With all of these variables ima say just wait on it. Focus on getting a job or some form of steady income before you embark upon this car journey. They're plenty Miatas out there so even if he does sell it there will more than enough out on the market.

Oh he's not selling it unless I make an offer... it's his personal vehicle and he knows I like it A LOT

That and he doesn't technically have it for sale ;) I'm just going to convince him that he should give it to me! (Hint: I'm helping fix his 89 Mustang GT... if he's driving that what will happen to the Miata??? OH I KNOW! Continue here...)

Via expanding foam and Bondo...

Kinja'd!!!

That is never a valid option for rust repair.

I forgot that the rocker panel is actually a part of the frame on NA Miatas :(

Whoops? Solution? I cut it out and weld in new sheet metal!
